Ocala Florida weather May 2011

Wild Flowers SW 80 Ave Ocala FL

It has been an unusually warm spring here in Ocala, with many days in April approaching 90 degrees.  Normally temperature in April should be in the low 80’s. It’s been dry as is to be expected in the winter and spring months here. The humidity won’t return until the end of May which is also the start of our wet season.

May temperatures are normally in the high 80’s and night time temperatures drop to the mid to high 60’s. By the end of the month it will get humid and stay humid until mid October. Afternoon thunderstorms should get going by the end of May too.

It’s always a sunny day here in Ocala. Even when you get rain it’s only for a few hours and the sun comes back out. If you’re sick of winter followed by cold raw rainy spring weather then move to Ocala. The hot and humid summers are a small price to pay for no winters.

Ocala Florida weather April 2011

So far April 2011 has been unusually warm. Actually more like hot. We’ve had several days close to 90 degrees. This is unusual since our average high is closer to 80. We’ve also seen a good deal of rain so far this month with a series of fronts bringing much needed rain during our dry season. Even though the temperatures have been high there is no humidity this time of year so the weather is great.  The spring is the best time of year here in Ocala and it lasts from late February until the end of May when the humidity returns.

Ocala Florida weather March 2011

It’s March and spring has sprung here in Ocala.  The grass has turned from winter brown to green. An azalea in my yard has a few flowers. The day time temperatures are in the low 80’s. The nights are in the mid 50’s. I don’t need any heat or air conditioning so this is a month of lower electric bills. It’s dry with no humidity. March is one of the best months of the year here in central Florida.

Actually things began to warm up in mid February after a cold January and record cold December. January was unusually wet for the dry season but we saw almost no rain at all in February. We had several hard frosts but not as bad as last year.

If it’s still the dead of winter where you live then think about coming to Ocala. We have the lowest median home prices in Florida. As I always like to say “The hot humid summers are a small price to pay for no winters”

Ocala Florida Weather February 2011

February in Ocala is the last month of our winter. Average temperatures are in the low 70’s. We can still get a light frost until early March but as I write this in early February the grass is already getting a little green. So far this month we’ve had a exceptional amount of rain and that’s a good thing in the dry season.

January was actually warmer then December or so it seemed. It was also unusually wet. I think the winter of 2010-11 will down in the record books as colder than normal.

If you’re up north dreaming of spring then you need to move to Ocala. I plan to start working in my yard next week. Around Valentines day is the best time to prune Crape Myrtle. I’ll also prune some other bushes and start spreading some mulch. I try to get all my gardening done by mid May before the humidity really gets going.

Remember, no mater how hot or humid the summers get, it’s a small price to pay for no winters.

Ocala Florida Weather January 2011

I always like to begin my weather reports with a look back at the previous month. December 2010 weather in Ocala was the coldest December on record, breaking the previous record that dated way back to 1917. If you read my December weather report you’ll see a link predicting a warmer and dryer than normal winter. Well I guess that report was about as accurate as the hurricane predictions. One thing that was correct was that it has been extremely dry here in Ocala. Since October we’ve only had a little over 2 inches of rain. The temperatures did get closer to normal from Christmas through New Years, back to the low 70’s.

January is traditionally our coldest month with a high of 70 and a low of 46. After December 2010 that will seem warm.

Ocala Florida Weather Update December 2010

After a nice warm Thanksgiving with temperatures around 80, the first week of December begins with a cold front and temperatures in the lower 60’s. The 60’s might not seem bad if you’re some where up north but to me it seems pretty cold. Just last week I was eating my turkey dinner on the lanai by the pool.

Winter in Ocala, is a series of cold fronts with a warm up until the next front comes along. Sometimes the cold fronts are close together and other times weeks apart. December in Ocala has an average high of 72 and a low of 47. See my Ocala weather page, on my web site, for all the monthly average temperatures and precipitation here in Ocala.

The National Weather Service out of Jacksonville, which covers the Ocala area, is predicting a warmer than normal winter. Apparently an El Nina out in the Pacific will give the Ocala area a warmer and dryer than normal winter this year.

Once again, despite predictions, Florida escaped without a major hurricane. If you’re concerned about hurricanes, Ocala is one of the safest places in the state of Florida.

Ocala Florida weather November 2010

As always lets start with a look at the previous month. October was one of the driest months on record in central Florida. At my house in SW Ocala we had zero precipitation. Other than no rain at all it was a beautiful month. There is no humidity this time of year and most days in October were in the 80’s.

November is another great month weather wise here in Ocala. Once again no humidity with temperatures in the mid to high 70’s. It will start getting cooler at night, gradually going from the 60’s to low 50’s at night by months end.

The dry season goes from October to May. During these months the days are warm and dry. This pattern is interrupted by cold fronts that bring some rain and a temporary dip in temperatures. It’s these cold fronts that bring Ocala the occasional frost each winter.

If you’re freezing your butt off some where up north ask yourself why. Houses are dirt cheap in Ocala, interest rates are at historical lows, Ocala doesn’t have the traffic, taxes or high insurance rates of South Florida. Call me, email me or use my Dream Home Finder to find out more about moving here.

September 2010

October isn’t a fall month here in Ocala but it is a month where the weather changes.  The humidity finally goes away and the temperatures are below 90  for the first time since the end of May. October temperatures are in the 80’s during the days and drop down to around 70 at night. The fall months in Ocala, if that’s what you want to call them, are a great time of year.

If you dread the winter then you should move to Ocala. Winters are dry and temperatures are in the 70’s. As I always say ” the hot humid summers are a small price to pay for no winter”.

Check out my Ocala weather page for more info including high, lows and rain fall for every month.

Ocala Weather September 2010

September is a summer month here in Ocala. If you’re reading this up north some where then you probably think September is the beginning of fall. Here in Ocala the temperatures in September will stay around 90 for the whole month. There is a little less humidity than July and August but it’s still plenty humid by most peoples standards.

August was even hotter than usual here in Ocala. Many days were in the mid 90’s. We seldom actually get above 95 here but the humidity makes it feel hotter.

September is the peak of hurricane season. It’s the warm ocean waters that feed the hurricanes and the ocean doesn’t begin to cool down until about November. Ocala isn’t a hurricane free zone, no where in Florida is but it’s about as safe as you can get.

Ocala Florida weather August 2010

This has been a crazy year for Ocala Florida weather. This winter set records for cold weather and now this summer is on pace to be one of the 10 hottest on record.  In July 21 out of 31 days were above normal. Rain has been about average but it seemed a little on the dry side at my house.

Here’s a link to an interesting weather article in the Starr Banner .

August weather should be in the low 90’s during the day and the low 70’s at night with regular afternoon thunderstorms. August is not the last month of summer here in Ocala. Both September and most of October are summer months.

August is also the month when hurricane season really gets rocking and rolling. The ocean temperatures are reported to be higher than normal, which is what fuels hurricanes, so it should be an interesting year. Ocala is probably the safest place to be in Florida during hurricane season but we do get tropical storm force winds and torrential rain.
